Drake Library patrons looking for books, media and more have a new tool available to use this fall. The new search and discovery application enables students to find materials in additional ways to enhance their research. AquaBrowser displays relevancy-based results as well as facets that allow sorting by type, topic, time period, date, author, region, language, user tags and other views. The word cloud visually displays relationships among terms to enable users to dig deeper into a topic.

Drake is the first four year SUNY library to utilize this new library front-end. AquaBrowser brings to light Drake’s extensive collections, providing users with a better search experience. Your comments and feedback are welcome by e-mailing Pat Maxwell (pmaxwell@brockport.edu)

Rick Bettencourt of Apple Computers, Inc. visited the Mac Users Group meeting Thursday, April 2nd. He gave us a detailed demo of iMovie 09 and we even had some hands-on tutoring. Below, Bob Cushman learns how to re-direct iMovie 09 to load and save projects from external drives with Rick’s help. Rick also covered other iLife ’09 applications. The new iPhoto had an impressive “Facial Recognition” feature that had the computer find people in photographs with little or no help from the user. This feature has the potential of saving many hours of looking through photographs to find the ones that have a specific person’s photo.

ITS currently plans to load iLife ’09 on all the Macs on campus this summer. As of this posting, iLife ’08 is loaded on all of the Macs in labs on campus, but we have worked out the licensing agreement to upgrade to iLife ’09.

It was a shame there were only around seven people at this event. It’s not often you get to meet with somebody from the company that makes the computer you’re using to ask them specific questions about both hardware and software.

We met in the ETC, or the “Educational Technology Center” down in 55A Drake. This lab has both high-end Macs and PCs (Dell Precision 390’s) The Mac Users Group (“M.U.G.”) meets the first Thursday of every month in the ETC at 11:30 am.
